The Rosary Church in Tsim Sha Tsui, dating back to more than a century ago, is the oldest of its kind in Kowloon area.
In October 1903, with the generous donation of a Portuguese Catholic, Dr. Anthony Gomes, proposal for a new church was being initiated on a site released by the Canossian Convent. The foundation laying ceremony was blessed by the then Hong Kong Auxiliary Bishop Fr. De Maria on 10.12.1904. The Rosary Church was completed and consecrated by Fr. De Maria on 8.5.1905, yet it was formally granted the status of parish church much later in January 1949.
The existing features are largely the outcome of a series of renovation work carried out in the 1990’s. The modern building facilities provide a comfortable venue for liturgical services. For instance, the design of baptismal font and interior features are reflection of the spirit of holy liturgy promulgated in the Vatican II. To celebrate the centennial event of the church, major restoration project for the church building and the adjoining office was undertaken since 2003 and completed in early 2005.
Rosary Church was listed as Grade 2 Historic Building by the Antiquities Advisory Board in 1990. Such designation reflects its architectural attributes and also bears witness to the sustained development of the church for enhancement and improvement to better serve the changing needs of its community.
